What if every generation has been absolutely certain… and every generation has been wrong?
An original idea by David Selves developed by David Selves and Lynton Guest, music and lyrics by David Selves, Lynton Guest, Nick Capaldi and others
WOKE! The Opera is not a lecture. It is not a political rally. It is not a left-wing musical or a right-wing musical. It is a satirical journey through seventy years of British social history that asks an uncomfortable question:
From the optimism of post-war Britain to today’s battles over identity, race, free speech, equality and culture, WOKE! The Opera follows one early ordinary mixed-race South London family whose lives become entwined with the changing fashions of politics, business, advertising, morality and public opinion. But at the centre of the story stands an extraordinary narrator—the Ghost of Chaos Future—part philosopher, part comedian, part ringmaster. Wholly surreal. He guides the audience through the decades with wit, music and irreverence, reminding the audience that certainty has always been humanity’s greatest weakness.
In his rousing satirical number “Everybody’s Right,” the Ghost watches successive generations confidently proclaim that they have finally discovered the answers.
The show’s central insight is deceptively simple. The arguments change: The slogans change :The flags change :The labels change ……. But people rarely do.
The word “woke” becomes not the destination but merely the latest stop on an endless historical journey. Yesterday’s certainties become today’s embarrassments. Today’s unquestionable truths may become tomorrow’s curiosities. Rather than telling audiences what to think, WOKE! The Opera invites them to laugh at everyone—including themselves. It celebrates disagreement while questioning intolerance. It exposes hypocrisy wherever it appears. It reminds us that every generation believes it is wiser than the last, while history quietly smiles and prepares its next surprise.
Against this sweeping social backdrop unfolds an intensely personal love story. Eric and Flo fall in love at a time when mixed-race relationships were still viewed with suspicion by many. Their family grows alongside modern Britain itself, experiencing changing attitudes to race, politics, identity and freedom over seven remarkable decades.
It is a musical that combines humour, emotion, memorable songs and sharp social observation. It moves effortlessly from rock-and-roll to contemporary musical theatre, from comedy to tragedy, from nostalgia to biting satire. But above all, WOKE! The Opera is about conversation.
It asks audiences to look back at seventy years of social change and recognise a simple truth: every generation has been convinced it occupied the moral high ground. Every generation has looked at those who came before with a mixture of pity, amusement or disdain. Yet history has an inconvenient habit of humbling us all. The musical never asks the audience to choose sides. Instead, it asks them to recognise themselves. Whether your instinct is to cheer the rebels, defend tradition, embrace change or resist it, there will be moments when you laugh in recognition—and perhaps moments when you feel just a little uncomfortable.
Great theatre entertains first and provokes thought afterwards. Like The Book of Mormon and Hamilton WOKE! The Opera uses music, humour and unforgettable characters to explore ideas much bigger than the story itself. It is a celebration of love, family, resilience and the wonderfully contradictory nature of human beings. But at its heart is people, the enduring relationship between Eric and Flo. Their marriage survives social prejudice, a lesbian daughter, changing political fashions, generational conflict and personal tragedy. Through their eyes we witness Britain reinventing itself again and again, while discovering that the biggest challenges are often not political at all, but deeply personal.
With a vibrant score spanning the decades, a cast of memorable characters, spectacular ensemble numbers and a narrator unlike any seen on the musical stage, WOKE! The Opera promises audiences an evening that is hilarious, moving, thought-provoking and gloriously unpredictable.
The Ghost of Chaos Future leaves us with one final reminder.
History isn’t finished. We’re still writing it. And perhaps the next generation will laugh at us just as much as we laugh at those who came before.
WOKE! The Opera isn’t about telling you what to think.
